Is very easy to understand Rio Metro. By Metrô you can reach the main points of interest of Rio de Janeiro. It has stations near the VLT(Tram) stops, which facilitates its integration with the Bus Station and Santos Dumont Airport. So, if you arrive in the city from these terminals you can reach the South Zone or the Center using the VLT and the Subway. So easy.
Here’s an outline on how the lines circulate in the Rio Metro.
Line 1: ( orange on the map) is the one you will use the most. It’s the access to the main tourist attractions in the city. Connecting Tijuca district to the Barra da Tijuca district.
Line 2: (green on the map) connecting the Pavuna district to the Botafogo district. Use to visit the Maracana stadium.
Line 4 (yellow on the map ) runs from Ipanema to Barra da Tijuca.
ATTENTION: As you can see on the map, from CENTRAL STATION to BOTAFOGO STATION, lines 1 and 2 (orange and green) stop at the same stations and share the same plataform. Stay tuned to identify the destination of each train at these stations. Use the map.
The line 1 train has the destination written in red above the entrance doors. The line 2 is in green. To avoid errors, whenever possible, try to use line 1.
Metro Rio. How to buy boarding passes?
In order to travel you’ll need to buy one of the two cards available:
Cartão Unitário (Unit Card)
It’s only valid one-way.
For several trips it’s best to buy the prepaid card.
Once the unit card is scanned it releases the turnstile. The ticket is retained.
Cartão Pré-pago (Prepaid Card)
You can buy one with as many trips as you want. It saves time by avoiding the lines at the purchase windows. Buy one for each passenger. Just pass it through the scanner to release the turnstile each time. As long as there is a balance on the card it can be re-used.
The card will show the balance after each use. Keep it with you. The next time you use the Metro you can show it at the purchase window and ask them to re-load it with the number of trips you need.
The prepaid card can be reloaded at pay machines at the stations with cash(Real) only,
but these machines don’t give change and you can only load with R$ 5.00, R$ 10.00, R$ 20.00 and R$ 50.00 (Reais) bills. Each ticket costs R$ 4.30 one way. It’s always better to load the card at the windows so there won’t be any chance losing any money in change.
“Metrô na Superfície” (Subway on the Surface)
The” Subway on the Surface” is a bus that makes the integration of Subway with the neighborhoods of Gávea, Humaitá, Botanical Garden and Leblon. Using this link you do not pay for the bus ticket. Bus depart from Botafogo subway station and Antero de Quental subway station in Leblon (see in the map the light blue lines). To get this advantage you need to use the prepaid card.
Eg .: To go from Copacabana to Botanical Garden: buy a Prepaid Card to use it in the Metrô and keep it to be re-used at the Bus also. Buy one for each passenger.
Embark line 1 (train with the red sidelight), get off at the Botafogo station.
To exit the platform, follow the signs towards – SAÍDA “A” – SÃO CLEMENTE – HUMAITA – Metrô on the Surface.
You will find the integration bus station right in front of the station, next to the Metrô exit.
After boarding the bus pass the prepaid card through the scanner to release the turnstile. Nothing will be charged.
To make things easier.
Save this map of Rio Metro on your phone. It’ll be useful in helping you locate and decide which direction to take the train to, from the station you are at.
Stay tuned, “Rio I go” blog will provide all necessary information to help you use the Metrô and BRT buses more easily.
SUMMARY: Print and brig with you.
Oi
Hello
Good information in your blog. Very done.
May I ask can I always buy metro ticket from the window at the station. I prefer this way because I do not read Portugese but I can translate on paper and give it to the conductor.
Time is about 7pm Sunday after visit Sugarloaf. Any idea window still open.
Thanks.
Raymond
Hi Raymond, I suggest you use Google translator on your mobile. You can speak in English and show the Portuguese translation to the attendant at the subway station.
