Taxi ride in Rio de Janeiro can be a good choice of transport but, you should know some rules and tips that can prevent headaches.
TAXI IN RIO DE JANEIRO, HOW IT WORKS?
There are two types of taxi in Rio de Janeiro:
1 – The Simple Ordinary Taxis (a.k.a. “Amarelinhos” due to their yellow color.)
Ordinary taxis in Rio de Janeiro are yellow with a blue stripe on the side and, the vast majority, also has printed contact phone number and the logo of the cooperative on the back side of the cars.
2 – The Special Taxis or Accredited.
Generally these are more spacious and newer. There is no standardized color to distinguish them. Their rates are usually 80 % more expensive than the price of the ordinary ones, because they are only booked by radio and are monotorized. Their rule to return to the original point of departure upon completing the booking.
All taxis have red plates with white letters.
Rates.
There are two rates for taxis. So when you get into a taxi, pay attention to the Taximeter. It must be turned on in the beginning of the trip and two numbers will show on the screen, one of which is the amount to be paid (PREÇO A PAGAR, as you see in the photo below) and the other is according to the time of the day(TARIFA) (# 1 or# 2).
The value that appears upon starting the trip is the basic standard fare or a.k.a “bandeirada” .
During the day, Monday to Friday, from 6am until 9pm the screen “TARIFA” will display the number 1 ( cheaper fare).
From 9pm until 6am is # 2. Twenty percent more expensive. These are the city regulated rules for all taxis.
In addition, the driver can charge extra for:
- luggage or large volumes transported,
- waiting (or stop time),
- return fee, if you are being dropped off at destinations outside the city.
These rates are supposed to be regulated and stablished by the city rules. It’s always better to talk to the driver and set the cost before boarding to avoid unpleasant surprises.

IMPORTANT TIPS:
1- Always write down the phone number of the Cooperative including the car identification number or plante number (look on the back side of the cars), in case you leave any belongings behind. It makes it easier to recover them.
2 – At the Airports and Bus Stations there are booths of Taxi Cooperatives where you can pick a taxi, common or special, paying a fixed price. It’s a bit more expensive, but sometimes is more convenient so you don’t have to worry about road blocks or traffic jams which can extend the trip and increase the price. 3 – IF ANYONE APPROACHES YOU, IN OR OUT OF TH AIRPORT TERMINAL OR BUS STATION TERMINAL, OFFERING A CAB, SAY, NO! Go to the cabin of the Cooperative, and only there, book one.
4 – The cost for the trip should always be the amount shown on the taximeter. Avoid making any price arrangenments directly with the driver, because you may end up paying a much higher price.

GOOD KNOW:
5 – Avoid rush hour traffic (between 7:30am to 9:30am and 5pm to 7pm) because you will get stuck in endless traffic jams. Especially if it is going long distances. The Metro, although will be corwded is probably your best option and the fastest. Make sure there are Metro stations close to your destination.
6 – Nowadays mobile phones come with GPS and maps that help you move around the cities a lot easier. Use these tools and plan your itinerary. If by taxi, tell the driver the main streets of where you are heading to, so he knows the way you rather take to the destination.
A good app to use in various cities in the world is the MAPS.ME you download the city map and can access it even without the internet.
7 – Another pretty safe option is to use one of mobile applications for taxi call. With them you have all the information about the driver (name, phone number and license plate) and pay by credit card. The main ones are 99Taxis and Easy Taxi. The Uber also works fine, despite the protests of taxi drivers. Download the one of your choice. They are very safe to use.

Na minha opinião, para turistas que não conhecem a cidade a melhor opção seria o preço fixo no taxi, pois assim a responsabilidade de saber o trajeto e engarrafamentos fica com o motorista e o motorista so vai no caminho mais lonje se quiser. Diferente se for no taxímetro e ele dar a volta ao mundo pra chegar no lugar sem o cliente conhecer. Agora, se vc ja conhece o caminho aí sim é vantagem o taxímetro pois mesmo se ele tentar dar a volta ao mundo pra chegar o cliente pode orientar o caminho.
No último domingo, dia 5 , o cachorrinho da nossa família sumiu em Jacarepaguá. Após intensa divulgação do fato, recebemos uma ligação de uma pessoa que contou que viu o cachorrinho desorientadona rua Edgard Werneck por volta das 19:00 h. Como o trânsito estava bastante perigoso e o cachorrinho estava tentando atravessar um taxista, bondosamente,acolheu o cachorrinho salvando-o da situação de perigo.
Gostaríamos de localizar o taxista, expressar nossa gratidão pelo gesto de bondade e reaver nosso cachorrinho. Para isso, gostaria da divulgação do caso nas mídias sociais de vocês taxistas.
Minha família está bastante triste pela falta do animal.

Se você não conhece a cidade e quer pegar um táxi sem se preocupar com o trajeto que o taxista vai fazer, nem com possíveis engarrafamentos, a melhor opção é o táxi com preço fixo com passagem comprada nos balcões dos aeroportos e rodoviária.
Nananinanão, o mais barato é Uber minha gente (porém só da pra chegar de uber no Galeao)
Certo André, em todos os lugares onde atua o UBER costuma ser a opção mais barata (menos nas datas onde a procura é muito grande e o valor da corrida sobe absurdamente). O objetivo aqui foi explicar como funciona o taxi no Rio.
Dá para usar o UBER pra sair do aeroporto,. Tem que subir para o segundo andar – desembarque, e pedir um UBER, marcando como ponto de encontro à letra do portão de saída ( A, B, C, D….) onde você está. Identifique o carro pela placa.
Peguei um táxi , sexta feira passada no S.Dumont para São Conrado, paguei R$ 90 pelo taxímetro, perguntei para o meu parente que mora no Rio e o motorista fez o caminho correto, bem pouquinho transito,achei que o taxímetro andou muito depressa, o motorista foi cortez ,quanto ao estado do veiculo deixou a desejar,alem de não aceitar pagamento com cartão ( alegou que trocou a maquina blá blá), táxi amarelinho do aeroporto.

O valor que você pagou está correto. Existe um calculador de tarifas de taxi do Rio de Janeiro, que te da uma previsão aproximada de cada corrida. Tem um link pra ele no post, mas vou repetir aqui: http://www.tarifadetaxi.com/rio-de-janeiro. Claro que depende do trajeto, do transito e do tempo de parada em sinais. Por isso quando vier ao Rio calcule a tarifa e veja também o caminho que o site indica, assim você fica mais tranquilo.

Corrida areporto Santos Dumont a São Conrado no dia de hoje 26/05/2018 custa, na bandeira 1 R$ 57.90 a 68.38, na bandeira 2 porém, é bom lembrar o tempo que o carro ficou parado no trânsito. Eu já fiz uma corrida que custa em media R$13.00 a R$ 52.00 uma hora parado em um lugar só em um grade engarrafamento. Imagine um cara da uber que trabalha só no aplicativo parado o prejuízo que o camarada leva muitas vezes dado que em corrida pequena é com preço fixo, coitado.
Um carrinho de bebê conta como volume a ser cobrado ?

Muitas vezes o transporte de uma mala não é cobrado pelo taxista. Se você for transportar muitos volumes é bem provável que ele cobre por peça. Se for apenas o carrinho não acredito que cobrem. Vale negociar com o motorista antes de embarcar.
