Hiking the Morro da Urca is very fun, but before the climb, it’s worth a walk on Praia Vermelha (Red Beach _ see region) which is just across the square of the cable car station. On the left from the beach promenade, facing the sea, there is an entrance to the Claudio Coutinho trail (see region) which is a path surrounding the hills of Urca and Sugar Loaf. Strolling around, if you’re lucky, you can encounter some native animals such as monkeys and toucans.
This is the trailhead for the hike leading to the Morro da Urca, the first stop of the cable car. It’s a 30 minute uphill walk. For those who like adventure and contact with nature, it is worth the effort. See the video.
On weekends, the track is always busy, especially in the afternoon. Good times to start the hike are: in the morning around 9: 00 when it is not too hot and in the afternoon before 4: 00 to still benefit from the day light and to arrive there before sunset. Once there, relax in one of the lounge chairs while enjoying the sunset and a stunning view.
From there you buy the ticket to go up the Sugar Loaf and then return to Urca.
